Bariatric Pre & Post-Operative Assessments

Bariatric patients have an associated increased morbidity and mortality risk. These are people with diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and poor pulmonary reserve. In addition, cardiac dysfunction is common in obese individuals including cardiomegaly, both systolic and diastolic dysfunction, and an increase in sudden death.

Frontera is the leading provider of mobile cardiac, pulmonary and vascular diagnostic testing services. We provide pre- and post-operative cardiac and vascular risk assessments in the convenience of the bariatric surgeon's office. Frontera's standard protocol is to perform a Cardiopulmonary Metabolic Exercise Test (CMET) and a resting echocardiogram - this is the gold standard in bariatric care.

Pre-Operative Cardiac Assessment

  • Resting Echo - It is critical to perform a resting echo prior to stress testing to assess for any LV dysfunction, aortic stenosis, or pulmonary hypertension.
  • Cardiopulmonary Metabolic Exercise Test (CMET) - The CMET is the only test that directly measures maximal MET levels, an exact index of the patient’s functional capacity, which in turn determines a patient’s ability to withstand surgery.* Our PFTs provide helpful information for anesthesiologists prior to surgery and aid in care post-op.**

Post-Operative Cardiac Assessment

  • Venous Studies - The Venous study can detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that develops in the leg during the post-operative period; DVT increases the risk of a pulmonary embolism, a leading cause of mortality following bariatric surgery.

Test Results in 3 Days or Less
